UX/UI Design

PROJECT DETAILS

Design of an intuitive tool for forecasting future material costs, optimizing decision-making in infrastructure projects.

Key Information:

  • Client: Ferrovial Digital Hub

  • Tags: UX Design, UI Design, User Research, Interactive Prototypes

  • Tools: Figma, FigJam, ClickUp

  • Team: Project Manager, Data Scientists, Front-end and Back-end Developers

Project Context:

The Cost Projection project was initiated by Ferrovial’s digital team to address a crucial challenge in planning large infrastructure projects: uncertainty in future material costs. As a Senior UX/UI Designer, I led the design of a user-focused tool that provided reliable and accessible projections based on historical data and predictive analysis.

My Role:

As a senior designer, I led these key areas:

  • Initial Research: Identified business and user needs through interviews, data analysis, and desk research.

  • Ideation and Conceptualization: Facilitated collaborative sessions, such as Crazy 8’s, to generate innovative ideas. Designed user flows and logical structures to ensure a coherent and efficient experience.

  • Wireframes and Prototypes: Created low-fidelity wireframes for structure validation and high-fidelity prototypes in Figma to simulate the complete experience for testing and validation.

  • Testing and Validation: Conducted user testing sessions to identify pain points and make iterative improvements based on findings.

  • Continuous Iterations: Implemented regular enhancements based on data and feedback to keep the tool relevant and adaptable.

Problem to Solve:

Ferrovial needed a solution to accurately predict material costs for infrastructure projects. The lack of advanced tools created uncertainty and affected strategic planning. My task was to design an intuitive, efficient tool aligned with business objectives to facilitate informed decision-making.

Design and Development Process:

  1. Initial Research and Problem Definition:

    • Stakeholder Interviews: Identified pain points and expectations through structured sessions with internal leaders.

    • Desk Research: Analyzed market trends and existing tools to uncover opportunities for differentiation.

    • Current Flow Mapping: Collaborated with the team to map existing processes and highlight problem areas.

  2. Empathy and Insights Analysis:

    • Empathy Maps: Documented how end users (project managers and buyers) perceived current issues.

    • Affinity Diagramming: Grouped key insights into themes to focus the design.

    • User Personas: Developed profiles representing different user types to guide design decisions.

  3. Ideation and Conceptualization:

    • Crazy 8’s Ideation: Generated rapid, creative ideas, prioritizing those with the greatest impact.

    • Sitemap and User Flows: Designed logical structures and key flows to ensure intuitive and efficient interactions.

    • Wireframes: Created low-fidelity prototypes to quickly test concepts before advancing to final designs.

  4. Design and Implementation:

    • Interactive Prototyping: Built dynamic prototypes in Figma to simulate the real experience and validate concepts.

    • Accessibility: Ensured inclusivity by implementing WCAG 2.1 standards.

    • Design System: Developed a modular visual guide to ensure consistency and efficiency in future iterations.

  5. Testing and Validation:

    • User Testing: Validated prototypes with Ferrovial’s team, identifying areas for UX improvement.

    • Support Tickets Analysis: Reviewed reports from the support team to address recurring problems and reduce friction.

  6. Continuous Iterations:

    • The project remains active with regular updates based on feedback, ensuring the tool stays effective and adaptable to evolving needs.

Project Impact:

The Cost Projection tool enabled Ferrovial to optimize strategic planning by reducing uncertainty and improving cost estimation accuracy. Its scalable design ensures it can evolve with new functionalities, making it a key asset for future infrastructure projects.
